The Stories That Shaped Us
Some lessons cannot be taught in a boardroom. They are learned in airports, embassy shelters, interview halls, and moments when doing the right thing mattered more than doing business.
Not "Just" a Maid
I had just landed at Dubai International Airport after interviewing candidates in Nepal when my phone rang.
A security guard from a luxury residential community pleaded, "Ma'am, please come quickly. She's hiding here. They're looking for her."
The young Filipina domestic worker had been hidden under a table to protect her from her employers. When she stood up, she was trembling—her face swollen, her body covered in bruises.
Her "offense"? Her employer had offered her a cigarette. Afraid to refuse, she accepted. Moments later, she was beaten for smoking.
I brought her to the Philippine Embassy, where I also found dozens of distressed domestic workers living in overcrowded conditions. Before leaving, I donated rice, food, and drinking water, and told the staff, "If she—or any of the others—need anything, call me."
That day reminded me that recruitment doesn't end when someone starts work. Sometimes, it begins when they need you the most.
The rescue was later reported by 7DAYS Dubai and Emirates 24|7, highlighting the importance of protecting workers even after placement.
AED 120
It was supposed to be just another visit to the immigration office.
Instead, I found a young hospitality worker in tears, begging not to be sent to immigration detention. She had overstayed her visa—not because she wanted to, but because she was missing AED120 to complete the process.
I paid the amount immediately and asked the immigration officer to continue processing her application. I also assured the officer that if, for any reason, the visa could not be approved that day, I would personally sponsor her so she would not be taken into detention.
What seemed like a small amount of money became the difference between detention and a second chance.
Sometimes, changing a life costs less than we imagine.
